MiALA Strategic Planning Team - Call for Volunteers

The 2023-2024 MiALA Board contracted with MCLS to help MiALA create its first strategic plan. We are looking for a small number of volunteers to join our planning team from July 2024 - May 2025. Volunteers could be brand new to MiALA, been involved for many years or anywhere in between.

Planning team members will:

  • Attend an in person leadership retreat in August (date TBD).

  • Participate in team meetings as well as planning meetings with MCLS where we will give our perspective on their engagement strategy. Meetings will be about monthly.

  • Help translate the member engagement findings reports from MCLS into a written strategic plan.

  • Present the strategic plan back to the MiALA Board and membership.

Please let us know your interest by completing this form by June 19th

President's Message

MiALA, you showed up and showed out! Our annual conference theme “Libraries: Where Ideas Take Flight” promised a two day excursion of learning and engagement, and it did not fail to deliver! Whether you were a “frequent flyer”, recently acquired your professional wings, or somewhere in between, there was something for everyone among a solid roster of 30 breakout sessions and 13 posters. There was even a surprise visit from Chloe the Therapy Pup, who was on hand for cuddles and pets during Thursday’s poster session (pictured below with our inspiring keynote speaker, PBS Kids librarian and advocate Mychal Threets).

Refueling is another MiALA conference tradition. Our opening reception at the state of the art Homer Stryker School of Medicine in downtown Kalamazoo provided the perfect setting for noshing and networking while enjoying a student jazz trio. The student presence was also evident in our conference logo, a light bulb with wings, which was designed by Korea Ray, a 2024 graduate of WMU’s graphic design program.

Much gratitude goes to our Conference Planning Committee, lead by Mary O’Kelly and our gracious hosts WMU, our on-site conference volunteers, and our many colleagues who as co-pilots helped to guide attendees to a higher altitude in their instruction and delivery of services through best practices, research, and practical models.

We are still looking for a landing spot for next year’s conference. Not sure your institution has “the right stuff”? Please reach out to the Board: board@miala.org.

The annual conference was the peak of a busy and productive year, but our IGs and committees are the wind beneath MiALA’s wings, and they will continue their important work of spearheading programs, initiatives, and policies in the coming year.

The privilege of being MiALA President has been an amazing, motivating, and yes at times exhausting experience. But all good things come to an end, and as of July 1 I will pass the pilot’s cap to the most capable Mies Martin from Aquinas College, who has been our Vice President (aka President Trainee) this year and Conference Liaison. As we begin in earnest our strategic planning process this summer I have no doubt that MiALA will continue its steady climb under his leadership.

Lastly we bid goodbye to our term-limited Board members: Veronica Bielat, Lori Debie, Carin Graves, Aaron Kilgore, Denise Leyton; and look forward to them continuing their MiALA journey in other roles.

Be good to each other, rest and recharge over the summer, and remember that the sky’s the limit!

MIX 2024 Call for Proposals

The theme for this year’s MIX conference is “Educate, Evolve, Empower: Navigating the Digital Frontier in Library Instruction.” Our information atmosphere is ever-changing, and with the advancement of digital technologies, our approaches to library instruction need to evolve.

This event is a one-day, low-cost, informal learning opportunity for librarians across Michigan who engage in, are interested in, or are curious about library instruction. Join colleagues from academic, public, school, and special libraries to gather, connect, and discuss our instructional strategies, issues, and ideas.

We encourage professionals from all disciplines to attend – and consider whether you are interested in leading your library colleagues in discussing these topics!

The MIX 2024 planning committee invites proposals for:

  • Individual or group presentations

  • Panel discussions

  • Workshops

  • Guided, participatory discussions

  • Sessions will be 45 minutes and should include 5-10 minutes for Q&A.

Possibilities for session topics include:

  • AI

  • Critical Thinking

  • Digital Footprints

  • Digital Literacy

  • Digital Tools

  • Information Literacy

*Please note: Because of the nature of this grassroots event, we cannot waive the registration fees for presenters.

Proposals are due by June 11, 2024, and notifications will be sent out by June 18. All proposals will be blind-reviewed by the MIX Conference Planning Committee. To apply, complete the proposal form. We look forward to hearing from you!

2024 ALOTY Award Winners- Congrats!

The Academic Librarian of the Year (ALOTY) award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of a MiALA member and their contributions to their institution and academic libraries. The Board took a hiatus last year but we’re back with not just one but two winners (pictured with President Darlene Johnson-Bignotti).

Our 2024 ALOTY award winner is Jen Fiero, Coordinator of Library Student Engagement, Jackson College! Jen has served on the MiALA Board as a Community College Representative and is a former Chair of the Community College IG. As noted by Jen’s nominator in an excerpt from their extensive letter: “I have always valued Jen’s innovative mindset. She often enters my office enthusiastically, declaring, “I have an idea!” Many of Jen’s ideas have evolved into creative programs and services. Jen’s dedication to students, her ability to innovate, and her ongoing service to the profession make her a fantastic academic librarian. The enthusiasm and passion she brings to work each day, along with her multifaceted skill set, set her apart from other candidates”.

Jen will receive a statuette, a cash award, and complementary registration for next year’s conference, and will also be honored at the Michigan Library Awards ceremony at Grand Traverse Resort in October.

Kudos are also in order to Sara Memmott, Library Faculty, Eastern Michigan University. As the Honorable Mention awardee Sara will receive a certificate of recognition and complementary registration to next year’s conference.

Sara’s nominator said of her: “Sara established herself as a leader and presenter in the field of chat reference, not only managing the chat services for EMU but volunteering to serve as an administrator and scheduler for the Research Help Now virtual reference collaborative. As the Chair of the Instruction and Information Literacy Interest Group, Sara is a hardworking and valuable member of MiALA, and an asset to academic librarianship in general. She does not hesitate to give of her talents and expertise, but she is humble and would never nominate herself for this award”.

A big “thank you” to our ad-hoc awards committee Stephanie Mathson, Lee Parker; Patricia Skinner, and Rachel Smith.

Could be you or someone you work with be our next ALOTY winner? Watch for a call for nominations in March 2025. We’d like to develop even more awards. If you’re interested in serving on the Awards committee, (membership is for one year only) please reach out to: board@miala.org
