Message from the President

Greetings to the MiALA Membership!

For this month I want to again congratulate the winner of the Academic Librarian of the Year Award, Jeremy Barney from Hope College! Jeremy Barney was awarded this honor at the MLA Awards Ceremony on Oct. 19.

I also want to remind folks that they can manage the MiALA Committee and Interest Group emails they receive in the member portal. Members can also view the calendar of meetings and events by scrolling down on the homepage to Upcoming Events. Lastly, don't forget to check out our Member Spotlights and consider nominating a colleague!

2023 Conference Theme and Call for Keynote Speaker

The Conference Committee is hard at work on the 2023 Annual Conference in Holland (May 18-19, 2023) and is pleased to announce the theme Riding the Waves: Finding Balance in an Age of Uncertainty.

Who do you think would make an outstanding speaker for the keynote address at MiALA’s 2023 Annual Conference? If you have some ideas, the conference committee wants to hear from you. Please submit your ideas via this form for the 2023 annual conference by Nov. 9. We look forward to hearing from you and thank you for sharing your ideas!

Data Literacy Mini-Conference Recap

The Data Literacy Mini-Conference, generously sponsored by the MiALA Instruction & Information Literacy Interest Group and iASSIST, took place Oct. 24 at Michigan State University Libraries in East Lansing. Forty attendees enjoyed a keynote address about a hip-hop epistemology of knowledge in LIS, a speed networking experience that shuffled table groups until participants had the opportunity to meet just about everyone in the room, and talks centering the Writing Center perspective on student research, ethical use of biodiversity data, and secondary data literacy. Over lunch, attendees had the opportunity to visit a Special Collections exhibit of data ephemera, including a lift-the-flap medical textbook and data visualizations from W.E.B. DuBois.

Instruction & Information Literacy IG Casual Conversation

"Transitions in Library Instruction" was the theme of the Instruction & Information Literacy Interest Group’s first Casual Conversation of this academic year, held Oct. 11. Participants shared experiences transitioning among different modes of instruction over the last few years, lessons carried forward, and the shape of instruction now. Thank you to those who shared, listened, and made connections with each other during this hour.

All are welcome at upcoming Casual Conversations, whatever your role or position. See the links below (or under Upcoming Events) for more information and Zoom registration for these upcoming conversations:
